Getting started
I just installed Settle. What do I do first?
Open it. macOS will ask you to grant Accessibility permission — click Open System Settings, find Settle in the list, toggle it on. Arrange a few windows the way you like, click the Settle icon in the menu bar, hit Save current layout, give it a name. That's the whole loop.
macOS says permission is granted but nothing moves. Why?
Usually a stale TCC entry. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility → remove Settle from the list, then add it back with the + button (select Settle from Applications). If it still misbehaves, quit Settle, restart, and try once more.
How do I save my first layout?
Open the apps you want (Chrome, Slack, Terminal, whatever). Put them where you want them. Click the Settle menu bar icon. Hit Save current layout. Name it. Done — it's one click away from now on.
What's a workspace, and why would I need one?
A workspace is a named group of layouts. "Work" might have Coding, Writing, Review. "Personal" might have Browse, Chat, Reading. Switching workspaces hides layouts that don't belong to the current context, so your menu bar stays short and relevant.
Automation
How does monitor-based switching work?
Open Settings → Automation → Monitor rules → Add rule. Pick a set of displays (e.g., "Built-in only" or "Built-in + LG HDR 4K"), pick a profile and layout. When that exact set of monitors is connected, Settle applies the layout. It doesn't fire on sleep, brightness changes, or resolution tweaks — only when the display set actually changes.
Can I schedule a layout for a specific time?
Yes. Settings → Automation → Time rules → pick a workspace and add slots. 9:00–13:00 Mon-Fri → Coding. 14:00–17:00 Mon-Fri → Writing. The timer checks every minute, aligned to the minute mark, and applies when the slot starts. If you manually pick a different layout inside a slot, Settle respects it and waits for the next slot to kick in.
Can I position a specific app when it launches?
Yes. Settings → Automation → App rules → pick an app, pick a position (left half, right third, maximize, etc.), pick a display. The moment that app launches, Settle moves it there. Handy for Zoom, Slack, Figma.
I added a layout to my menu bar but the snap zones aren't triggering.
Check the Snap to Grid toggle at the bottom of the layout editor — it's per-screen now. If it's off for this display, windows won't snap to the grid when you drag. Keyboard shortcuts still work regardless.
Trial & purchase
How does the 14-day trial work?
Every feature is open from day one. No credit card, no sign-up. When the 14 days end, Settle's active features pause until you complete the one-time $9.99 unlock. Your saved layouts stay — they're just waiting.
Is this a subscription?
No. $9.99 is a one-time purchase through the Mac App Store. Pay once, yours forever, free updates across this major version.
I don't like it. Can I get a refund?
Yes. Refunds go through Apple directly: reportaproblem.apple.com. Find your Settle purchase, request a refund. Apple usually replies within a few days.
I bought Settle on one Mac. Does it work on my other Mac?
Yes. Mac App Store purchases follow your Apple ID. Install Settle on your other Mac, open it, hit Restore purchase on the paywall — done.
Privacy & data
Does Settle collect anything?
No. Full stop. See privacy — it's 318 words and reads in about 30 seconds.
Where are my layouts stored?
On your Mac, as JSON, in ~/Library/Application Support/Settle/.
Nothing leaves your device. You can open the files in any text editor if you want.
